Desktop Security...

Hello, Everyone knows that you have to be exceptionally careful before making a financial investment, especially for expensive software like desktop security.

That's why we've created this page to advise on what to look for in desktop security and why its important.

Desktop security has developed enormously over the course of the last few years.  In part this development has become necessary due to the rising concern over online crime and the need to keep desktops away from harm.  There are various types of desktop security that help to keep desktops safe from attack.

Having some form of online security is important for people using the internet on desktop machines.  The reason for this is not restricted to viruses and spyware but others may also try to gain access to the desktop in order to gain access to sensitive information.  The purpose of their trying to do this may come down to identity theft or some form of financial fraud.

The first and foremost step to prevent this from occurring is to invest in some form of anti-virus program.  There are many options with respect to this that are available, some paid and some free.  Many of the free options available are just as good as the paid options in terms of virus scanning capablility.

Often installing anti-virus protection as a one-off will not be sufficient, but it will also be necessary to install the latest updates on the software so that your desktop security is properly kept abreast of the latest important developments.  Fortunately this is quite straightforward to do as it usually just involves access the website of your anti-virus software provider and keeping track of the newest updates.

In general it is best not to store highly sensitive information in files on your computer, such as social security number or credit card details.  The same applies to online chat rooms, or through email or instant messaging.

Also steer clear of pirated products, as they are illegal and may send messages over the internet to monitor your activity.  In fact be cautious about downloading any executable files onto your machine altogether, unless they are from a trusted source as they may contain a program that will harm your desktop.

Also, when opening emails, be careful about the attachments that you open.  If an email looks suspicious and is coming from a source that is untrusted or unknown, it is best to not open it as it may contain some form of virus.

From a hardware point of view it is worth bearing in mind that your desktop security can be compromised by power failures or floods, and other things of this nature; so having a regular data backup schedule will be worthwhile, as may be an investment in an uninterruptible power supply.

It is reassuring to know however, that should desktop security be breached on your machine by some means and as a result the data corrupted, it is sometimes possible to recover the data with the appropriate professional assistance.  This can often involve sending the actual memory hardware of you desktop to a team of experts to see if the data can be recovered from it.

There are many important features of desktop security that are important to consider when you are attempting to setup any form of desktop security system.  The specific features to consider to protect and secure the your desktop range from restricting access, securing the network, backing the desktop layout and locking and restoring it, to controlling access to external drives.  Taking simple precautions such as this can protect hardware and data from theft and corruption, prevent interference with internal components, amongst a number of other things.

Perhaps the greatest concern when it comes to desktop security is the concern to protect your personal information stored on the desktop.  Fortunately however, there are now at our disposal a number of tools that can prevent fraudsters and hackers from gaining access to this information and in so doing preserve desktop security.

Firstly it is now possible to acquire security software to protect form worms, trojans, spyware and identity theft.  Using an established virus protection software solution will enable you to protect your desktop from a large number of security threats.  Software packages such as do vary in the functions and options that they provide.

The use of a firewall is also an important aid in the prevention of problems with desktop security.  A firewall prevents suspicious or unauthorised sources from gaining access to your computer when you are connected to the internet, and in so doing puts an obstruction on any malicious programs trying to gain access.

It is important to remember to change your passwords regularly on your desktop.  This prevents any hackers from be able to guess your password and gain access to sensitive information.  People sometimes neglect to do this because it entails their needing to remember the newly set password each time; however they do this at the cost of overlooking the security benefits of the procedure.

An awareness of phishing scams is also important in preserving security. This usually occurs when you receive a fraudulent email aimed at gathering your personal information.  Always seek to prevent this from occurring by only giving your personal information to well trusted sites that encrypt the data as you send it over the internet.  The benefit of encryption is that it secures this sensitive data as it is sent over the internet by coding it.

Backing up the data on your desktop is also very important in that it allows for you to be able to ensure that data is not lost and is still saved in external storage devices like external hard-disk drives and DVDs.

When browsing the internet be cautious about downloading the too much free software, as some of this software can contain harmful programs – good security software can protect you from downloading these.

Overall it is important to realise that investing in the latest security software and carrying out good security practices is important if you would like to ensure that your desktop security is kept intact.

When it comes to desktop security software there are so many options available it is often unclear about where it is that is best to turn for the answers.  Many different options exist, some of them involving paid packages, others free options.  r tend to have differing preferences when it comes to this, as often it is found that the free desktop security software options will come with many of the functions of paid software packages anyway.  However, those preferring the paid option will tend to find that having a paid for product confers advantages of a more commercially professional end service.

Although many will opt for paid desktop security options, it is often found that free versions of the same software are also available.  These free versions are usually a functionally truncated version of the software that provides the basic level of security necessary for things like web browsing, like a simple firewall.  However, the free versions may lack other important features such as anti-virus scanning and regular live updating.

One of the problems encountered when attempting to use free desktop security software is that even if it provides anti-virus scanning for your desktop, it may be designed only to report back problems found from the scan as opposed to actually fixing them.  This obviously makes the software of very limited use.

Another big drawback of free softwares often encountered is that customer service is not available or would be seriously compromised in contrast to their paid counterparts.  If you are already quite expert with desktop security troubleshooting, this may not be a problem, but for many this will mean that if problems are indeed run in to, there will not be anywhere to turn for answers; in which case you may need to turn to paid software afterall.

In summary, the choice may well end up being a personal one, based upon your present level of IT proficiency and your confidence in the product that you opt for.

One particular threat to desktop security software comes from artificial anti-virus or anti-spyware programs on the internet.  These programs pretend to be virus protection facilities, and often arrive on user’s attention in the form of pop-ups that suddenly appear on the screen, informing that the desktop is infected with a virus and that the means to remove it is to download the fake desktop security software.  If users proceed to install the program, they can actually find that the mischievous has been given a chance to be downloaded onto the desktop.

What is is particularly insidious about many of these programs is that they are designed to look like standard, reliable desktop security software; repeating much of the language and look of the more trusted resources available on the internet, so it is very easy to be fooled.  Some will even go to the extent of claiming industry recognition of the software, which is untrue and designed to deceive people.

The goal of these fake desktop security softwares is to encourage users to upgrade and purchase the full version in order to clear viruses found on the desktop as a result of false scans (these can be designed to convey the impression that a virus exists when in fact it does not).  The full version will obviously incur a charge and so cheat people out of their money.

Particularly malicious versions of these programs will try to install key logging software on the desktop, which will attempt to steal confidential information.

To further add to the difficulty with these malicious programs is that they are difficult to remove for your system once it has been infected.  Removal may end up being a manual process, whereby the computer registry may need to be edited directly, a process probably beyond the competency of most users.  There are some software utilities that can help with removal, but overall prevent is the best cure.

Be careful where you download anti-virus software from, and only do so if you can see names that are familiar and trusted, or have good customer reviews.
